Obviously a KID

Post by James Pratt » Sat Feb 22, 2025 11:37 pm

What line in the King's Indian is this? Has it been popular of late and, if so, who with?

Istvan Bilek-Peter Clarke
Kecskemet Zonal 1964
King’s Indian E68

1 Nf3 Nf6 2 g3 g6 3 Bg2 Bg7 4 0–0 0–0 5 d4 d6 6 c4 Nbd7 7 Nc2 e5 8 Rd1 Re8 9 e4 c6 10 Nc3 Qc7 11 h3 b5 and 1-0 in 21.

Thanks
James

I assume that it should be 7 Nc3 but not sure what move 10 for white should be.

The KId has never been popular at the highest levels, although Fischer pulled off a stunning voctory against a Mongoloian IM.

It appears to be a branch of the symmetrical King's Indian. The last game up to 11...b5 I can find is from 2024. Pajcin - Jaworski, Ustron Open Masters, Poland.

The line for White with Qc2 and Rd1 has been known for years, obviously enough since Bilek tried it in 1964. Authors of books on the Kings Indian would usually refer to it as one of the lines in the fianchetto variation. The earliest example I found is a Najdorf game from 1939 and it was a moderately popular try for White in the 1950s and early 1960s.

There are numerous move orders which can reach the characteristic positions.

Clarke's plan with ... b5 didn't seem to work terribly well.

If you mean Fischer-Myagmasuren in 1967, that was the *KIA* not KID.

In any case the KID has been popular at the highest level, as its adoption by Fischer and Kasparov testifies. Not to mention John Nunn!

Nakamura also played it a lot as have Gawain Jones & Luke McShane.
