I am sorry to report that George Harper passed away yesterday aged 92 years. Whilst never a strong player, George was a reliable club member of Newark Chess Club where he held a number of administrative posts including Treasurer and Chairman over the years. Prior to retirement as a school teacher, George ran the Shirebrook School Chess Club which competed for many years in the North Midland League. Whilst George's last rated game for Newark was in 2019; he continued to be an active member of the club until three years ago.
