I was looking forward to seeing a possible final round top board clash between Grieve and Arkell. Have they played many times before? I hope Keith is OK. I did not know that Gerald Moore had beaten Keith before. That is rather unusual, for an underdog to obtain a win against the same GM twice.

To be fair, Gerald played very well. The other loss was when I dropped my Queen against him in the Simon Bartlett Memorial a few years ago . I've played Gerald many times ( I seem to have played everyone many times!!), including a 'best game prize' winning effort back in 1987!

Incidentally, I haven't 'withdrawn', I have been given a zero point bye. As a matter of principle I draw a subtle distinction between the two.

As Ken knows from when he couldn't play me in the last round many decades ago, health issues rear their ugly head ever more as the years roll by.
I've suffered in silence during this tournament.

I also wasn't well enough to play the last round in Teplice back in June, and so didn't win the tournament despite being on 7.5/8!
On the bright side I then won the next 4 ( Bad Bertrich, the British Senior Ch, Manchester Summer and Swindon) to bring my tally of victories in FIDE rated events this year to 15.

Many thanks to John Constable for putting on another smashing event, and we all hope John and Christine can somehow make it happen again next year, though we understand if it proves to be too difficult.
