It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to let you know that Wallington Chess Club has
decided to close.
During our AGM, the committee expressed concerns regarding the club’s membership,
financial situation and the availability of committee members. This led us to hold an EGM
last Wednesday (23rd September) to discuss whether continuing the club was a viable
option.
Regrettably, we have decided that, due to the problems facing the club, we will be
closing from next week, which will be our final Wednesday club night.
I am very sorry that this is quite abrupt. Unfortunately, this also means that we will not
be able to participate in the Surrey League this season. I appreciate that this may cause
some disruption, particularly given that the season is already underway, and I apologise
for any inconvenience this may cause.
Thank you for all your support of Wallington Chess Club over the years. We wish you and
all the teams in the league the best of luck for the rest of the season. It is a great shame
that we have reached this point, but we feel that this is the right decision given the
circumstances.

A letter circulated within the Surrey County Chess Association (SCCA) states that Wallington Chess Club was founded in 1895, but a report in the Chess Player's Chronicle (October 31st 1883) states that they were one of the 6 clubs which founded the SCCA in 1883.

They may well have lost their webmaster. The person named on their website hasn't played for them since December 2023. He's been playing for Southampton University since October 2023.

Sadly, you might well be right and no doubt the login credentials for the site will have only been known by that person.
