I assume that Simon Williams is just pratting around against Peter Constantinou. Short of a horrendous blunder over the next 7900 pointless moves. Unless someone has a silicon friend switched on that says otherwise.

Keith has got away with it against Salimbeni (the clocks, by the way, haven't been reset, they've not been working on that board). 39.Rf1? lost and 39..Qg4! was the move to beat it. Now I'm afraid George is struggling, not least because he's dropped the exchange. (Later edit: no he hasn't.)

I am afraid Jackson may have missed one chance too many. 60...Re2+ is wrong because if 62.Rd5 d2 the rook can't get across behind the a-pawn quite as quickly as it could have done if it had stayed on e4 (or gone to a4 on move 60). I think Aaron has probably got a draw here.

Apart from a few 1980s outings for Bird's Opening (which of course, allowed 2e4 against anyone who "cleverly" decided to play the From) I have only *ever* played 1e4 and am deeply proud of that fact :P

FISCHER WAS RIGHT over d-pawn openings :D :D

Can anyone explain the opening in Adair - Tymrakiewicz? I play Alekhine's Defence myself, but this exotic line against the Voronezh variation with 9... Bf5 with multiple piece and exchange sacrifices throughout a long middlegame, in exchange for White's weak black squares, loose king and poor development, is entirely unknown to me. Is this new (old!?) theory? Has Tymrakiewicz just made it up, and just played a lovely game? Was it sound? Anyone have an engine running on it?

I think e6 was probably a blunder but fortunately for black it wasn't that clear. With hindsight, sacrificing the exchange on d5 didn't work out well and it looked good for black (at least practically) after he sacrificed it back on e3.

Interesting. So was something like Bf2 forced in place of Rxd5, due to the dual threats of Nc6-e5 and Nc6-b4, winning back material? I'm observing without an engine.

I know there is a sort of line with 9... Bf5 10. d5 but Black usually goes 10... e5 when 11. dxe6 Bxe6 is supposed to be alright for Black because of the idea of d6-d5, but it all seems a bit airy fairy and no one seems to play it, going for the madness after 9... e5 instead.

I'm really not sure. Maybe Qd2 instead of Rxd5 but I'm less sure the more I look at it.

Surely Arkell - Salimbeni is just a draw? I can't see any reason for it to have lasted this long...

The only try I can see is putting the bishop on c8, king on d7 and threaten Re8 but I assume if black keeps his rook active he can always start checking or be able to play Rf8 at the right moment. I've lost enough drawn endings to Keith to not totally rule out a win. I expect a result by move 160 though

I was looking at 123... Rc3, and not finding a way to avoid the rook exchange, which would have totally killed it. However, that didn't happen, so what do i know? :P

Yes that may well have shortened the game by a few moves :? Both players must be totally knackered by now

I'd love to see what the clock situation is, as well. As it is, move 160 appears to be where it will be finishing

I hope for George's sake he doesn't end up defending R&B v R. Keith has an amazing score in that ending. Apart from 126 Re7 which seems to win and the line you mentioned just 3 moves before it has seemed almost inevitable they'll reach a conclusion around move 160
