British Championship 1958
Who won?
I ask because Wikpedia has Penrose. But Di Felice (Chess Results, 1956-60) has Barden and Penrose on the same score, but 1. next to Barden and 2. next to Penrose.

"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

It was the first of Penrose's 10. Pretty sure about that

Re: British Championship 1958
There was a 6-game play-off match between Penrose and Barden which took place from 24 November to 5 December, with the proviso that, if the score was 3-3, an extra game or games would be played until a winner was found. In the event Penrose won 3½-1½ and the 6th game was not played.
Penrose had lost to David Pritchard in the first round of the tournament proper.
It's pleasing to note that several participants in the 1958 even are playing in the Senior Championship this year: Dickson, Ellison and Rumens from the Championship and Nicolson and Doye (assuming Doys in BCM is a misprint) from the Major Open. I also note that ARG Horton was playing in the British Boys' Championship.

Ah, thanks. In fact the play-off is given in Di Felice, but there's nothing in the entry for the original tournament to suggest anything other than a fist place for Barden. Somebody should point this out in a review. Perhaps even me....Richard James wrote:There was a 6-game play-off match between Penrose and Barden which took place from 24 November to 5 December, with the proviso that, if the score was 3-3, an extra game or games would be played until a winner was found. I note that adds Penrose to the list of players who lost in the first round and went on to win! I detect another thread....

Surely not. Gormally, possibly, but not Barden. Or perhaps a fist place is what you get for winning a chessboxing tournament?JustinHorton wrote: a fist place for Barden.

You've overlooked Bernard Cafferty who also played in the 1958 British Championship and the 2010 British Senior Championship.Richard James wrote:It's pleasing to note that several participants in the 1958 even are playing in the Senior Championship this year: Dickson, Ellison and Rumens from the Championship and Nicolson and Doye (assuming Doys in BCM is a misprint) from the Major Open. The British Championship could be more enjoyed by all if those at the ECF, started providing attractive locations for it to take part in rather than bland cities and towns with little to say about. I can do it for you if you want, it's not hard.

Received wisdom on this is that the British Championship which is only sometimes directly sponsored needs a free or very cheap venue for its financial viability. As a consequence, cities, towns and venues seeking publicity can be available for offers.MJMcCready wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 3:46 amThe British Championship could be more enjoyed by all if those at the ECF, started providing attractive locations for it to take part in rather than bland cities and towns with little to say about. I agree completely, when organizations formed and chess clubs began to emerge, no one estimated the size of the task in locating suitable venues and keeping them. On a national front, it's always been whoever would take what little we could give them will do, wherever that may be. BCF & ECF members who constitute our governing bodies have, of course never had any say, and are always left to try and make the best of it and focus on their chess and not the location despite how shockingly poor they sometimes were, like last year for example.Roger de Coverly wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 12:15 pmReceived wisdom on this is that the British Championship which is only sometimes directly sponsored needs a free or very cheap venue for its financial viability.
