Railway Euro Group Chess

Post by Richard Cowan » Fri Nov 12, 2010 1:49 pm

For those interested...
A strong Czech Republic team retained their Euro Group Chess title with an outstanding performance in winning all three of their matches, which were played at Networkrail's Westwood Leadership Centre in Coventry. A 5½ to 1½ win in the first session against Railsport GB was followed by a 4½ to 2½ victory over Switzerland, then a 4 games to 3 win in their final lmatch against Austria.

Frantisek Savkov and Jodef Sebesta of the Czech Republic were the leading players of the four country tournament with three wins each, while their colleague Martin Muzic won 2½ games. Best of the GB players was Richard Cowan of Thales who won his games against Austria and switzerland.

Result: 1. Czech Republic 14 pts; 2. Switzerland 10½ pts; 3. Railsport GB 10 pts; 4. Austria 7½ pts.

I used to walk past the Westwood Leadership Centre every week on my way to and from coaching a school chess club - I didn't realise they played chess at the centre itself though!

Trevor Jones of Guildford was playing in this match (and told me about it in the pub the other evening). I know he doesn't read this forum but I will ask him for some more information when I see him next.
