Please record this is a possible moment in History that should be remembered by all, as Egypt might be edging towards being a true democracy like Switzerland.

Please note if every member of FIDE had a single vote they would probably not have re-elected Ilyumzhinov, the guy has no recognisable FIDE grade, so why is he running our organisation?

Neither does CJ, and he's our President?

All hail the President - whether he can play chess or not, as long as he gets on the telly.

Well, he said FIDE grade... For all we know, Iyumzhinov might have had a Russian rating, but might not have been good enough to get a FIDE rating until the floor was lowered.

But in context... Ilyum is President of FIDE, CJ de Mooi is President of the ECF.

Sure. I couldn't understand his argument, which seemed to be along the lines of "Ilyumzhinov doesn't play chess, ergo he's a poor President of FIDE". I know Roger had a similar complaint when John Paines was ECF Chairman. I don't really see what the fuss is about, to be honest.

The fuss is about people running things, when they don't understand what they are running, a good example being 'Chancellor of the Exchequer' when the person in that exalted position has never done a days work in their life.

Work being defined as 'the expenditure of energy to the benefit of others, or the automation of work in terms of labour saving devices like the plough pulled by a tractor.

I'm pretty sure Ilyumzhinov knows what he's running. OK, he is an eccentric, and his skills in running FIDE are questionable, but he obviously cares about chess and its worldwide development.

However much work the Chancellor of the Exchequer has done before becoming an MP (which in the incumbent's case is limited mostly by the fact that he was 30 when he was first elected), that's not the main problem with doing the role well. The main problem is that an economy is a complex and chaotic system, over whose inputs you only have partial control.

Yeah like the 'rule of law' internationally, it is every culture for itself, like my culture is better than your culture.

The UN is a toothless organisation and lets keep it so.

Lets keep a third of the world starving. just so we can keep the 'status quo' planetary wide, in terms of cultural forms of behaviour, such as the acquisition of money being a religion.

If you don't believe me, Google 'Alan Sugar' I prefer making money to sex.

On the topic of moderation, might this discussion be better continued in the non-chess section?

Probably. It's one of those things where it's hard to work out where to split the topic, but I'll try to do so.

The problem with this notion is that FIDE is a federation of chess federations rather than individual people, so every federation has one vote. You would need votes weighted by players or games in some manner to get a popular vote.

It's not so different to the ECF, at least in the ECF there's a weighting in favour of the number of games played under the auspices of the voting organisation

The ECF president is present in the international rating system - he hasn't played any games to qualify for a rating
http://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=416770
(This must reflect his 4NCL games presumably all against non-rated opposition else he would have a partial rating)

I appeared there last year simply by being a member of the ECF, even though I'd never actually played a rated game. At least, that's my guess. No idea how I appeared there before I'd played any games. :?
