Several of today's games illustrate how much play remains in deceptively straightforward positions (another valuable lesson I learned from Jon Speelman's "Analysing the Endgame"). I only have time to play evening league chess, but I am constantly amazed at how swiftly average club players will talk about "drawn" or "won" positions which actually have plenty of play left in them.

I think the first week has been very good entertainment. The majority of the games have been very hard fought and there's a lot of good clashes still to come. I think a lot of the players will be very grateful for the rest day tomorrow.

Only one check and then the queen covers the b4 and c5 checking squares. White also had the option of f8=R if she hadn't time to check the stalemate trick.
