Edit: until just now obviously. players not cooperatingPaul Cooksey wrote:if the clock times are reliable, they are very interesting. Howell has been playing on the increment, under 1 min for most of the game. Hawkins around 5 minutes most of the time. So Hawkins playing at the same speed, but keeping a small cushion. Maybe a tactic for keeping calm.

I think the times have suddenly swapped over, it must be Howell with less time. I've noticed this happen in a few games.

Same sort of thing happened... 101...Qxf4+ 102.Qe5+
Congratulations to Hawkins!

Result of the day not the same thing as game of the day, methinks. Anyhoo, who was it who said they never got their games published because they usually went on too long? (Keith Arkell?)Gavin Strachan wrote:not Hawkins...
ROUND 11:
in the battle of the GingerGM DVD series guest presenters, Nick Pert seems to be implying he doesn't think much of Corporal Jones' Grand Prix Attack.
edit ... and perhaps wisely, Jonesy decides to sidestep. Expect his motto for the day to be: "they don't like it up 'em."

Hmm
Lots of 1 e4 on the top six today, and two 3 Bb5 (+) Sicilians.
Could I give surprise of the day to Nigel Short's 1... Nc6 against 1. d4 ??! Is it really called the Bozo-Indian?
..and... has Howell really spent ages thinking about his first move as White? Or is he late? Or are the moves not getting updated?
Gormally seems to have come for a fight, judged by the early ...g5 - g4

Agreed about ... Nc6. I thought that was more Speelman's cup of tea than Short's - but then his opening repertoire is pretty broad these days. Howell is routinely late to the board. THat's the most likely explanation I would say.AustinElliott wrote: Could I give surprise of the day to Nigel Short's 1... Nc6 against 1. d4 ??!

Re: BRITISH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS - THE GAMES
Wonder how many moves of 'mirror reflected' Alekhine's Defence theory (i.e. standard Alekhine line but on the opposite side of the board) we will get in Gordon-Short?
PS Though I don't imagine a Four Pawns Attack with f4 Qh4+ is that likely...

Re: BRITISH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS - THE GAMES
I'm trying to work out whether a noted time-scrambler also being routinely late is logical (brinkmanship, last-minute-itis) or plain bloody daft (if you're always time troubled, why blow 20 min by being late?).Jonathan Bryant wrote:Howell is routinely late to the board. Re: BRITISH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS - THE GAMES
It's plainly bloody daft - but so is habitual time trouble per se.
odd, isn't it [Short's opening choice] since he played the Alekhine v Gawain this year and lost to the 4 Pawns Attack! But of course it is different, and I once looked at 1...Nc6 and decided that 2 d5 was relatively harmless. 2 Nf3 is almost certainly the best - and certainly the most flexible - move. But OK, Gordon is evidently up for an unusual position too ...
I am actually just as struck by the line chosen by Yang-Fan. Is this his normal repertoire or has he decided that this is a relatively weak point in the Adams armoury - I can think of a surprising loss v Richard Tozer in 1989 and a bad loss in the England v China mnatch in Liverpool a few years ago for starters? It is the sort of opening which is likely to result in a clear advantage for White or a mess - but not straightforward equality.
Finally, how often does PKW play 1 e4?
