I wouldn't want to play Black's position against anybody in the world, let alone Adams.

I was just thinking that myself. I'm going to use the position after Black's 26th move as a test this afternoon to see if my daughter (graded 80 or so) can beat me with the White side.

Short played this variation in an earlier game (Nf6 caro). It is always a bit more cut and thrust than nd7 or bf5 versions. It had a lot of popularity around Bronsteins time but white has worked out good variations which is why it is not played as often and the queenside attack seems to more often than not succeed. Obviously if white goes strays then is blasted on the kingside.

Er, Qb2 was played two moves later, so not 100% accurate as a call.

After 32... a6 surely just 33. Rd7 would kill the game off

Sure, but can you find a refutation to the twin threats along the a1-h8 diagonal (Rxd8+ etc) and the simple cxb7? The queen would have been defending the c1 rook.
