Gibraltar and the lowest rated IM ever?

Post by Andy Burnett » Tue Jan 27, 2009 12:07 pm

I was looking at the pairings for the 1st round of the various events in Gibraltar which begins today, when I noticed a name which rang a bell.....from the Hastings thread a few weeks back...(OK, the name isn't given, but it doesn't take Hercule Poirot to work out who it is!)
Maxim Devereaux wrote:Beginning to suspect this should have it's own thread, but...

Obviously there would seem to be little point in cheating at a local level, but something like, say, Gibraltar, with £100,000 of prize money at stake, it's a completely different matter.

Which leads me to mention another sort of 'cheating' which went on there last year... the case of a Russian IM, rated 2450ish some years ago, whose rating then declined sharply to ~2150 to 2200 between 2003 and 2005, where it has stayed since. Played in both the Masters and Challengers 1 and 2, with the clear intention of picking up a whole raft of prize money

What he actual got was:
1st= Masters U2200 rating prize: £1500
1st Challengers 2: £1500
2nd= Challengers combined: £250

I understand £3250 goes a pretty long way in Russia... and at least there were some strong young Norwegians (both in the Challengers and his rating category of the Masters) and a few of the stronger English players to stop him making a clean sweep, which would have netted him up to £6000.

I see he's playing again this year, though only (at present) down for the Masters. I hope that the organisers have the sense to bar him from the Challengers tournament, if he attempts to make a late entry. Plus they seem to have removed the combined standings prizes from the Challengers and Amateur, but there's still up to £5000 at stake for someone like him (or a computer cheat, for that matter).

Maxim
This gentleman has indeed made it into the Challengers event. I've just looked him up on the FIDE website, and his ratings graph since 2000 is utterly bizarre! One example is this (with some 60 other games played in the intervening 'quarter-years')

Jan 2005 2392 22
Jan 2006 2181 45

It's quite common for someone to play lots of games within a short period to maximise their rating gain while they are playing well, but the reverse...?! Does this look as fishy as both Mr Devereaux and myself seem to think it does?

For altogether different reasons, the lowest rated IM surely has to be a fellow I saw playing at a tournament in Germany. It was at Deizisau, 2001 (maybe? maybe 2002?) and he was playing in the B-Open. German friends told me that this fellow (I will try to dig up his name) was the son of a high-ranking official in Kenya, who simply bought him his title. In Germany, his national rating was about 1900 or so.

Regards,
P.

It was Thomas Oparaugo, born 1970, and he was Nigerian. An IM, his FIDE rating is currently 2110. I will try to find his current DWZ (German national rating). Should be about 1900...

Ah, I see that he has gone up a bit. DWZ 2007 from the 3 December 2008 list. Plays for SV Oberursel.

And here is his full DWZ listing, dating from 1993 to the present:

Show me at what point he had a national rating that might make it likely he was of IM strength...

There are actually 2 IM's in the Challengers! The one that you are referring to has certainly seen his rating drop substantially between 2002 and 2005 but, in the last 12 months he has played about 40 games and been pretty consistent at about 2200. It's possible that there are legitimate reasons for such a dramatic drop in strength.

Of course, the organisers have the right to refuse entry to any player and I am sure that if the player suddenly saw a return to his previous playing strength then he would be refused entry to the challengers in the 2nd week of the festival.

Having just looked at last year's Gibraltar results, it would appear that one of the arbiters of the Challengers event was a certain Sean Hewitt! I'm guessing, then, that maybe this isn't the first time the issue has been raised and perhaps there is information (of the 'legitimate reasons' variety) that some of us aren't privy to? (If so, apologies for raising this publicly).

Andy,

I think it's perfectly reasonable to consider that such a decline in playing strength is "odd" and wonder if there may be legitimate or illegitimate reasons to explain such a decline. The problem of course is that it's almost impossible to be sure what the true reason is.

You are also right that the issue has been considered internally, and that we are monitoring the situation.

Fun and games :D

An update for those interested:- 4 out of 4 (against an average rating of 2088) and joint lead going into the final round. A quick draw is likely to be worth at least £1000 by my calculations!?

His game today was interesting. He won a totally drawn game purely because of his opponents time trouble.

Quite pleased to see that to be honest with you. I had been expecting a quick draw, but I'm guessing the '30-move no-draw offer' rule is in place for the Challengers event as well?!

A very convincing display by the young Norwegian - looking forward to the 2nd week event, and I'm very tempted to play next year myself (although I'm really hoping my rating next January excludes me from the Challengers!)

The 30 move rule does not apply to the challengers. I must admit I expected to see a quick draw too but then there would have been a 3 way tie and £1,000 each in prizes. A win, and you take home £1,500 - quite a difference. Not sure if both wanted to win outright - but I don't believe that either player offered a draw.

That's a bit of a shock to me. A win is £1500, a draw is at least £1000 but a loss ended up at £100 didn't it?
If the money doesn't mean anything to you, fair enough, but £100 only covers the bar bill for the week whereas £1000 would cover a fair chunk of the fortnight's expenses (with perhaps the hope of more money to come in the 2nd week)
Anyway, fair play to them if they both just went for it, I'm just very surprised!

Hm I have resisted posting for a while - but today Mr Kozlov beat Kotronias with Black. Looks like a blunder by White but oh dear is he really only 14 points higher than John Saunders.
