Chess player / chessplayer
Which usage do posters prefer - and why?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Doesn't 'chess-player' get a look in?
Isn't it a matter of time and how often the two words are used together? First the preference would be 'chess player', then 'chess-player' and finally, with the connection established, 'chessplayer'.

Speaking as a professional editor, all I can say is that it really doesn't matter. Just pick one and be consistent. There's no right or wrong in situations like this, just personal preference.

That's what I reckon, Ian, but my spellcheck thinks otherwise!
I mention this not because I like spellchecks, but because I don't.
