Re: Telegraph report about Austria
er, I think Andrew Martin was probably responding to Peter Turner's post immediately above his, saying that the trainers etc. worked hard, which I'm sure they do.
It's possible he was being ironic.

I can only echo what you say Kevin. The managers, coaches, parents and players all work incredibly hard on these trips.

Paul,Paul McKeown wrote:One comment I would make is that Mureck is on the frontier with former Yugoslavia and the Steiermark has had a long historical connection with Slovenia. Given the bloody civil war that befell Yugoslavia, with a genocide inflicted on Bosnia, it is possible that there undercurrents of ill feeling in Mureck. All speculation on my part of course, I've never been there, but perhaps someone might be better placed to confirm or deny this speculation?
last year I was head of delegation for the Scotland group in Mureck. There were two muslims in the party. I did not detect any islamopohobia from the local population or the tournament hosts. The border between Slovenia and Austria in that region is the river Mur. Nowadays (I think due to the Shengen agreement) the frontier bridges allow unrestricted access.
One of my claims to fame is that I once cycled from Austria to Slovenia and back before breakfast.
Road surfaces on the Austrian side of the river were far better but otherwise there were no obvious differences at the border.

Then the police will come to that judgement as well if the alleged actions did not happen to the family..I presume the police will interview other members of the group and may want to see the witness statements that have been given to the ECF.Sean Hewitt wrote:Judging by the ECF's unequivocal statement, it sounds very much like that has already happened.Peter D Williams wrote:Are you saying he should not spread the word for evidence? Some one may come forward who says this did not happen?
We will just have to wait and see what the police decide with the CPS.One thing is for sure the police will take this matter very serious when a child is involved.

Talking about Irony.
It's ironic that a complaint about the ECF handling of things is embraced on the CS noticeboard whilst a point of fact about the moderation of the CS forum by a CS member is firstly/blocked and then deleted so nobody can read it.
A point about Irony Carl (nothing more)
I do agree that the heads of delegation, coaches, players and parents do work very hard indeed in what is an intense schedule. It can be tough for youngsters and adults alike. Out of this though the focus should be the 'players' who are giving everything they've got and we should all be proud of them be they Scottish, English, Welsh or Irish they represent these islands where we live together.

I did suggest that we not go on regarding this point as it is not relevant to this forum, I won't ask againAngus McDonald wrote:It's ironic that a complaint about the ECF handling of things is embraced on the CS noticeboard whilst a point of fact about the moderation of the CS forum by a CS member is firstly/blocked and then deleted so nobody can read it.

Carl,
I accept your moderation. It's been more than fair.
Played quite a lot of football in my time. Didn't get booked that often

Thanks, Philip, that's clear. So any nonsense that occurred (and it is not clear that it did or to what degree) was internal to the group.Philip Thomas wrote:Paul,

As for Schengen, for the life of me, I can never understand the infernal British opposition to participation. Some nonsense about immigration, like the French and the Germans don't take great care with immigration from outside of the European polity? Bah. One wonders how much trade London, Kent or Sussex, for instance, lose from our neighbouring countries where day trippers presumably are stopped from impulse visits.

Re: Telegraph report about Austria
Just read the reports from Mureck on the English Junior Chess site, and some of the posts on the SCF thread linked above.
One thing that I hadn't been aware of was that this is apparently a recurring event in Mureck... and it also seems from this post that the Pension where the ECF group was staying (a family-run medium-size/30-bed one) seems to be a place the ECF have used before and know well.

Re: Telegraph report about Austria
There's been a group sent to Mureck every year for quite a few years. In previous years, I think it has been semi-official in that you could qualify by "being in the squad and wanting to go", rather than by winning a qualifier. This year with larger squads in Athens for the world Under 20 and in Prague for the Europeans, a smaller than usual group looks to have been sent.AustinElliott wrote: One thing that I hadn't been aware of was that this is apparently a recurring event in Mureck... and it also seems from this post that the Pension where the ECF group was staying (a family-run medium-size/30-bed one) seems to be a place the ECF have used before and know well.
I had expected previous reports to come up on a Google search, but they seem elusive.
Here's a report which tells us about a player in the 2007 edition

The chess results site is probably the place to look.
The Ehr family have been there.

The Austrian police (i.e. the force that have jurisdiction in this matter) have already come to that same judgement.Peter D Williams wrote:Then the police will come to that judgement as well if the alleged actions did not happen to the family..

Re: Telegraph report about Austria
The English police have not so far come to that judgement and are investigating the allegations. The English police can and have investigated crimes allegedly committed by British citizens in other countries.Sean Hewitt wrote:The Austrian police (i.e. the force that have jurisdiction in this matter) have already come to that same judgement.Peter D Williams wrote:Then the police will come to that judgement as well if the alleged actions did not happen to the family..
