"Oliver Twist ... is a great book."
Page thirty-two of the Sunday Telegraph today has a big article devoted to Hou Yifan.
Is it premature to discuss replacing Judith Polgar as the number one female player?

Dunno. It was only the Oliver Twist reference that got me to read the article.Simon Spivack wrote:Page thirty-two of the Sunday Telegraph today has a big article devoted to Hou Yifan.

Did Dickens play chess or feature it in his novels?
EDIT: To answer the actual question, I think this quote from the article sums it up: "she continues to build on a talent whose full potential is still many years from being reached." I think it is fair to say she has the potential to surpass Judit Polgar's achievements, though she probably still has a way to go yet before reaching that level.

There are some who disparage the achievements of our own grandmasters, which can lead to a defensive attitude.
One of our players, a very pleasant fellow, was rated number one in the world ahead of Ivanchuk. I can't recall whether it was for under eighteen or nineteen. He did not go on to become a world class player in the sense of being in the top twenty, although he is a GM.
I am genuinely uncertain as to whether Hou Yifan will become a top player irrespective of gender. I am not convinced there is the evidence, one way or the other. "Potential" is not something that can easily be measured, it is often merely guessed at.

that is pretty random subject title v content! I'll think I'll start a new thread: "My mum likes chips" and it's about Kasparov.

The title is a quote. It can be found in the article.
If Garry comments about your mum's fondness for chips, then why not?Gavin Strachan wrote:I'll think I'll start a new thread: "My mum likes chips" and it's about Kasparov.
