Howell has lost, but what was wrong with 52 h6?

I was just about to say after b3 I can't see how Howell can survive as after jacking in the knight the h pawn isn't going to queen. h6 - kf6 i think. do not want to think too hard might get a nose bleed

If you mean axb3 then Nf8+ and we both get a queen (i think)

@Matthew After they both queen, I think White only gets two checks - Qf6+ Kb5 Qe5+ Ka4 and then nothing.

I think after both sides queen that black can dodge the checks but it looked like the only try and I suspect it was his original intention.

soory i was looking at the end. at move 52.. kx n, h7, axb followed by ra8. Don't ask I'm watching harry potter. actually I can't count. yes king takes it does work.

I assume you mean 52 h6 axb3 53 Nf8+ or 52 h6 Ra1 53 Kg2. I agree - I can't see anything for Black except to queen as well in the 52 h6 axb3 53 Nf8+ line, but is that winning for Black? What are we missing?

It is winning as after both sides queen white will run out of checks (in the Nf8 line). But it looked the best practical chance.

i did notice he had not a lot of time and that is perhaps why he did not spot that line

And as you quite rightly wrote several hours ago in response to someone's suggestion that the ending was an easy draw, Short was likely to make Hawkins suffer in that ending with the rooks on.

Thanks. My oversight - I thought the ending with Q+N v Q+R would be difficult, but I completely forgot Black still had a b-pawn left on b4! (and that Black's queen on b1 conveniently defends all his piece and pawns).

I'm sure he saw it but probably used up all his time on it and then in desperation tried something else.
