What about 74...g5 instead of 74...Bd8? If Pert was still playing for a win, I assume that's what he would have played?

Next landmark in the game is move 100; that's when the fifty-move rule will kick in.

Pert can engineer the plan of ...g5 and ...g4 at some point.

So why didn't he do it on move 74?

I am not sure as it looked good to me. He finally played ...g5 on move 76.

I suppose if they've come this far they may at least go to 125 then push another pawn then go to 177.

EDIT: regarding odds on a draw. They've been playing for 7 hours and on increments only since god knows when. Chances of a blunder must be reasonably high.

Pert wants to play ...g4 at the optimal time, when he can gain the most from the pawn-break. It's not as if Jones can do an awful lot as a counter-plan.

Correct. Someone has to claim it when it's their turn to move. Like a three-fold repetition, if your move would bring about the fiftieth move without a pawn move or capture, you write the move on the scoresheet that you'd play, and then call over the arbiter to make the claim.
