I am not sure as it looked good to me. He finally played ...g5 on move 76.Alex Holowczak wrote:What about 74...g5 instead of 74...Bd8? If Pert was still playing for a win, I assume that's what he would have played?
Next landmark in the game is move 100; that's when the fifty-move rule will kick in.
So why didn't he do it on move 74?Kirk Gornall wrote:Pert can engineer the plan of ...g5 and ...g4 at some point.

What if neither player wants to claim a draw by the 50-move rule? Do they carry on forever?

Pert does not look terribly anxious to play ...g4. Any bets on anything OTHER than the draw?

Maybe so.Christopher Kreuzer wrote:What if neither player wants to claim a draw by the 50-move rule? Do they carry on forever?
I suppose if they've come this far they may at least go to 125 then push another pawn then go to 177.
This is kind of what it's like for the rest of us waiting for you to finish a game at Sunningdale Chris!
EDIT: regarding odds on a draw. They've been playing for 7 hours and on increments only since god knows when. Chances of a blunder must be reasonably high.

someone has to claim under 50 move rule: it does not operate automatically (I think)

Re: BRITISH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS - THE GAMES
presumably we may see some quick shuffling, then when they have ten minutes left, some lengthy thought.
Unless they're getting a bit fed up already.

Pert wants to play ...g4 at the optimal time, when he can gain the most from the pawn-break. It's not as if Jones can do an awful lot as a counter-plan.

Correct. Someone has to claim it when it's their turn to move. Like a three-fold repetition, if your move would bring about the fiftieth move without a pawn move or capture, you write the move on the scoresheet that you'd play, and then call over the arbiter to make the claim.Jonathan Rogers wrote:someone has to claim under 50 move rule: it does not operate automatically (I think)

Aha - do we see Corporal J's secret plan? Can he attack the c5 Pawn with more pieces than N-Pert can defend it with?
And Pert plays ...g4! Is this make or break?

Someone should put the money on the table beside them, make it more exciting... (though, ahem, its not about the money, of course).

.....ah. Nick has got in ...g4, not only before 50 move rule operates, but also at a moment when Gawain cannot capture on f3 with a knight, as he would have wanted to do and which he could have done until recently.

Like Ward-Hodgson in the British one year. I think they had about 5 repetitions whilst they saw how the other games were going- noautomatic draw

Don't know about money on the table, they must be in need of a bucket underneath it.Christopher Kreuzer wrote:Someone should put the money on the table beside them, make it more exciting... (though, ahem, its not about the money, of course).
The Corporal's motto shifting back to yesterday's, I fear.
