In this - the pre-match - thread we have (Sat 21 April)...

so, one down eleven more to go.
Wait a minute. What if this match is like Lasker-Schlecter? They saved the best 'til last.

First semi-slav of the match today, pretty certain not to be the last

I can't see today's game being anything other than another draw.

The kind of high quality, precise and fairly dull short draw that I think we are worried will dominate this match.

Now it is time to do some gardening :)

Interesting to see if Anand tries to force things a bit with White in game 3.......

Don't know about dull, Paul, I found it fascinating, although I was fairly sure it was always going to be a draw. Just interested to see the moves and work out what is going on. Draws? I don't really care, tbh, it isn't as if they weren't trying at all. Minority opinion, no doubt, but hey.

But what about the venue? People are always moaning here about how hard it is to venues, the cost, etc. And with justification, no doubt. But the Tretjakov! Fantastic. Chess still means something in Russia.

In a manner of speaking, both players used the Colle. :)

The second game was a bit boring, but the first game was fascinating. Shipov's analysis of it (there is a link to that around somewhere) is well worth reading.

Malcolm reckons "approx 500 million people play globally".

Really?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Justin Horton>"approx. 500 million people play (chess) globally" (Malcolm Pein). Really?<
Maybe he meant that many know the moves or have played a casual game.
At the sharp end things used to be smaller than now - in the year of Fischer-Spasski (1972) there were 84 GMs, 178 IMs and about 600 ELO-rated players according to one source.
