Maybe the rule where in the event of a draw, the defending champion retains his title, needs to be brought back? That way, one player will always be losing the match, and so has to chase it.

I think Anand has really good prospects to equalise the match today, Black's position looks difficult. Terrible in fact.

I thought Gelfand might play Qf6 and I didn't know why the computers weren't suggesting it. I do now.

Seems that Gelfand has thrown this game away. The whole plan with Re8 and Qf6 looks dodgy.

Gelfand has resigned. I suppose he didn't want to grovel after Nc6, keeping the queen, but still losing. Psychologically, is resigning like that showing respect, or is it a case of trying to move on to the next game as quickly as possible?

He just didn't see Qf2. To be fair, neither did the commentary team. Anand found it really quickly though!

I think this might be the record. I can only think of the 19 mover between Steinitz and Zuke.

A swift DB lookup shows that as the 20th match game, 1886, the game being played in New Orleans. A Steinitz Gambit!

A quick database check (using ChessBase to search for 'World Championship' in the Tournament field) shows nothing shorter than a 19 move win for Steinitz against Zukertort in 1886.

At 1145 your time, i.e. not long before the game started, we had a power cut.

The power came on again about five minutes ago.
