Why? We got a new Chief Executive at work a few years ago and the internet searches have told us a lot more about him than he has...

Please ECF no more crappy documents, there is no excuse for not providing some of these as PDF's - my mom could organise that

I really do not know why the ECF website does that. It would be much easier to access it if it were a page on the website.
For an earlier discussion on this, please see http://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php ... 1&start=30 (starting about half way down page 3).Carl Hibbard wrote:Please ECF no more crappy documents, there is no excuse for not providing some of these as PDF's - my mom could organise that
ECF, please ignore Jack and Carl. What you're doing is fine.
I want Word documents, not htmls which I have to paste into Word or pdfs which I have to convert to Word.

As the president is a ceremonial type role if Roger E wanted to change the membership scheme wouldn't he need to go for a committee role (feel free to correct)? I think the elections could be as close as the US presidential elections.

Common courtesy. Let someone speak for themselves first, and then add more information to threads on this forum with internet searches if you wish. Doing the internet searches first risks throwing up a misleading picture as not all the information will be there.Kevin Thurlow wrote:"Maybe he should be allowed to produce a statement before people go digging around on the internet?"

That may be courteous but if it is, I would agree with Kevin that it is surely not common!

There's always GoogleDocs. They can be viewed online or downloaded in Word, OpenDocument format, RTF, PDF, plain text or HTML. That should keep everybody happy. I do of course have pdf. It's just that it's much less user friendly than Word. It's no longer a major problem for me - I've bought a converter.
Never, ever, use Google Docs - always download properly. Google Docs doesn't always display the text correctly. In the last year, I've been accused by both Sean Hewitt and Mike Gunn of omitting key sections of a document. I hadn't; Google Docs had.

The manly choice is of course BBEdit on a Mac but then I am a little biasedSean Hewitt wrote:Radical thought - have both?!Carl Hibbard wrote:Have to totally disagree on this one David no excuse for not having PDF

Re: ECF Director elections for 2012/13
GoogleDocs can certainly make a mess of a complex Word document (tables and columns can throw it off), but so can Word itself. The usual culprit in the latter case is using a font that the document's recipient doesn't have. Compose the document online in GoogleDocs and you're unlikely to have a problem.David Sedgwick wrote:I do of course have pdf. It's just that it's much less user friendly than Word. I would definitely advocate GoogleDocs as a more flexible solution. And if all you're doing is reading a document I can't see how Word is more flexible than PDF.
Be prepared for a continuation of the vi/emacs flamewars...Carl Hibbard wrote:The manly choice is of course BBEdit on a Mac but then I am a little biased

There is still a lot to be said for Word Perfect or Vu Writer: both of these hold a special place for me.
When a lecturer at The University of Reading in IT I was asked to help a secretary who was trying out Word Perfect for the first time.
I was asked why the corrections she was making were not taking effect.
After I had scrapped the lumps of Tippex from the new fangled Visual Display Unit I was able to provide an explanation.

WordPerfect still beats everything else easily - still my main workhorse. (Whoever uses that gets my - non-existent - vote for President. #notreallyontopic)John Upham wrote:There is still a lot to be said for Word Perfect or Vu Writer: both of these hold a special place for me.

For a full-on SGML style approach I marked up my D.Phil thesis using LaTeX being scared of its super-set, TeX.Ian Kingston wrote: WordPerfect still beats everything else easily - still my main workhorse. (Whoever uses that gets my - non-existent - vote for President. #notreallyontopic)
Anyone used LaTeX or Tex? I'm not referring to specialist clothing or cooking products.
